Thyroid tumors is one of common tumors in the IRAN. AKT1 gene, plays an important role in controlling cell survival and apoptosis and its inhibition causes the cancer cells to become susceptible. Thus considered as a factor involved in Thyroid tumors. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms in rs1130233 (726 G/A) of Akt1 gene may influence Akt1 expression, consequently contribute to nodule formation and development and treatment response. This study investigated the association between Akt1 rs1130233 (726 G/A) polymorphism and susceptibility to thyroid tumors in northwestern Iran. This study was conducted on 80 thyroid tumor patients and 106 healthy controls. Different genotypes of Akt1 rs1130233 (726 G/A) were determined using Tetra-ARMS-PCR and then analyzed. Distribution differences in the Akt1 rs1130233 (726 G/A) polymorphism between the cases and controls were not statistically significant the genotype distribution and tumor size association was significant (p>0.05). These findings suggest that Akt1 rs1130233 (726 G/A) polymorphism may not contribute to thyroid tumor susceptibility in northwestern Iran but it can be useful in estimating the relative risk of thyroid tumors development in the studied population. It can be useful in development of thyroid tumors.
